Meet Mary
“While I am proud of the resume of accomplishments and humbled by the recognitions that I have received, GCISD has given me more than I have ever given to it because my GCISD story is about people – hundreds of them who are true difference-makers in our community.
I have been blessed to work with the most incredible people throughout these 4 decades of involvement, including these past three years serving as the Vice-President of the Board of Trustees. Serving this community is my privilege and honor.”
About Mary Humphrey
Education has been a primary focus for Mary her entire life. Within weeks after graduating from Baylor University with a degree in education, Mary began teaching summer school at Grapevine High School. Following an 11-year teaching career, she stopped working to spend more time with her young children but has been a volunteer in nearly every arena of GCISD during the 29 years since then.
While employed with GCISD, Mary taught all levels of high school English, including AP, coached the cheerleaders, and sponsored a number of extracurricular activities as part of the GHS teaching staff. She also wrote curriculum for new courses, which included the first GCISD AP Jr. level language arts course, and designed an elective course, World Literature, which focused on developing a global perspective through the study of literary works from a variety of cultures.

Supporting GCISD
As the Varsity Cheerleading coach, she took the cheerleaders to their first national competition, beginning the legacy of competitive excellence and accomplishment that the program still enjoys today. Mary directed a variety of extracurricular activities, including Student Council, the yearbook, and UIL Ready Writing. She also worked for GCISD as a substitute teacher for more than a decade after her stint as a classroom teacher and coach.
Even after leaving the classroom, Mary stayed involved in education and became a hard-working and experienced volunteer. She was active in the PTA at every campus where her children attended, serving as president at Timberline Elementary School and Cross Timbers Middle School. Mary was very involved in every booster club for each of her children’s high school activities, including GHS Band Boosters, GHS Tennis Boosters, and the GHS Cheer Booster Club. She served on the board of the GCISD Education Foundation for a decade, including being president for two years, and was named the 2010 Distinguished Friend. Mary also helped form the GCISD Walk of Honor in 2017 and served as its president for 3 years, 2019-2021.
GCISD Hall of Fame
Mary was named to the Grapevine High School Faculty Hall of Fame in 2025, an immense honor from the Grapevine High School Ex Students Association. The Grapevine High School Cheerleaders established a scholarship in her name years ago and continue to fund and recognize a senior each year with the Mary Humphrey Scholarship. Mary was also named a Friend of Children by the Timberline PTA and awarded an Honorary Life Membership by the Cross Timbers Middle School PTA.

History of Excellence
Mary has been closely involved with strategizing and implementing good educational practices in the district for decades. She taught all levels of English, wrote curriculum, and was a GT certified teacher. As a parent, Mary served on the 2010 steering committee for LEAD 2021. Furthermore, she served on the District Excellence Committee and the Campus Excellence Committees at both Timberline Elementary and Cross Timbers Middle School. Mary has personally worked with district-level administrators, including our superintendents, since 1990 on new projects and problem-solving to help create and shape GCISD.
Mary has been recognized for her contributions to GCISD by several groups, in addition to being named a Distinguished Friend by the Grapevine-Colleyville Education Foundation.
While Mary and GCISD share a great deal of history, they also share a vested interest in the future. Thirteen of Mary’s family members are GCISD graduates, including her three children and husband. Seven great nieces and nephews are current GCISD students with more about to enter kindergarten, and Mary’s grandchildren will also be GCISD students in the near future!

Experience Matters.
Mary’s experiences have thoroughly prepared her to serve as a Trustee of GCISD, and now with three years of Trustee experience, she can continue to lead our district into a bright future. She has the personal perspective of being a teacher AND a parent who is familiar with every facet of our district.
Mary is passionate about problem-solving to ensure GCISD provides a top-tier educational experience for our students, is a work place where teachers and staff can professionally thrive, and offers the opportunity to share partnerships with our communities and engage our stakeholders. Mary has invested over 40 years in GCISD and is dedicated to making it the best that it can be for years to come.
