Why I'm Running

With more than 40 years of experience teaching, volunteering, and leading in GCISD, I know where we've been, and I understand how we got where we are today.  I am prepared to lead us into a bright future, one guided by improved transparency, more robust community engagement, and a creative vision filled with hope and defined by smart decisions and innovative thinking.

A Story of....

Academic Achievement

When I interviewed for a job to teach here in the late 80’s, I was told that GCISD was ‘the best kept secret in the metroplex.’"

The accomplishments of our district are definitely no longer a secret!  For three years in a row, GCISD has been rated the #2 school district in DFW and the #4 district in the state of Texas.  (View Niche.com here)  Mary is committed to pursuing continual academic improvement for all students, and as an educator herself, she understands what that takes. This success does not happen without intentional planning and implementation of programs that prove to produce student academic success.

To highlight a few recent gains:

-2025 SAT results showed GCISD students scoring an average of 1078 as compared to the state average of 963.  This is an increase over the GCISD average score of 1046 in 2024.

- In 2025 GCISD students achieved the district’s highest number of Advanced Placement Exams earning a 3 or higher in the past 15 years, earning GCISD a silver status on the AP Honor Roll.

-Between 2023 and 2025 GCISD realized an 89% increase in students reclassified from Emergent Bilingual to English Proficient.  Mary has championed the often-overlooked sub-populations and is particularly proud of this astonishing improvement.

A Story of....

Excellence in Extracurriculars

GCISD provides enrichment for our elementary grades through a myriad of programs and clubs that address the diverse interests and needs of our students.  Our secondary campuses offer the opportunity to learn and compete in fine arts, athletics, and academic programs.

The Lone Star cup, a program by the University Interscholastic League (UIL) of Texas, annually recognizes the highest achieving high schools in Texas by awarding points for success in competing at the district level and beyond.

Grapevine High School and Colleyville Heritage High School consistently rank in the Top 20 of all schools in Texas in their division.  Mary was a coach and her own children benefitted from great coaching and extracurricular experiences in GCISD.  These opportunities are paramount to motivating and equipping our students for future success.

A Story of....

Tireless Advocacy for Teachers

Mary spent over a decade in the classroom and understands from personal experience that the real work with students happens on our campuses and in our classrooms.

This year GCISD was named #1 among the Best Places to Teach in DFW out of 95 districts! And #11 in Best Places to Teach in Texas and #11 in Districts with Best Teachers in Texas!

We are the BEST place to teach because we have the BEST teachers and coaches.  Academic and extracurricular success would not be possible without dedicated and outstanding staff.  Continuing to support our teachers and staff with the resources they need, a teaching environment where they can thrive, and competitive compensation is at the top of Mary’s priorities. Creating the capacity in the district’s budget to give much-needed pay increases is a must.

A Story of....

A Secure Financial Future

Today, GCISD’s greatest challenge lies in creating capacity and sustainability in our budget to ensure our future financial health.  Capacity is necessary so that we can provide competitive compensation for our staff, and we must be able to sustain operating within our available revenue year over year to protect our future.  With our aging community’s decline in enrollment, the state’s lack of funding to cover inflation and new mandates, and GCISD’s ongoing Robinhood payments, fiscal responsibility is more important than ever.

We must continue to:

  • Reduce expenses by operating more efficiently   Link to explanation of school consolidation.

  • Increase our revenue by creating new, innovative revenue streams.

  • Continue to advocate for GCISD’s needs with our state officials who control educational funding. Mary has visited our representatives in Austin every legislative session since she was elected.

  • Efficiently manage our bond debt to keep our tax rate low for our citizens who face increasing property taxes due to rising property values in our communities.  The tax rate has been reduced by 45.81 cents since 2019 which is the lowest rate in GCISD in over 25 years.

A Story of....

Investment in a Vision

We are writing a new chapter of GCISD’s story as we look toward the future for our school district. We sit three years into the district’s 5-year Scorecard plan, and now is the time to look at how we should adjust to the changing landscape of public education and to cast a new vision- moving forward with a new superintendent at the helm.

This is a time of transition, a time that offers an opportunity to be innovative, creative, and forward-thinking about what education in GCISD can look like for our children.  I believe that a declining enrollment in no way suggests a decline in our quality of education. I believe that we still have new programs to create and new buildings to construct to replace the old.

Our best days are ahead as we find the best ways to “Honor our Legacy. Equip for the Future. Achieve Excellence.”   I am ready to partner with YOU as we write the next chapter of the GCISD story together.

Educating Generations of GCISD Students

I have been a part of writing GCISD’s story, a story of educating generations of students to grow and thrive.  I have 13 GCISD graduates in my family, including my own 3 children.  I currently have 7 nieces and nephews in our schools, and have more, along with my own grandchildren, heading to Pre-K soon. I am invested in our future, and all of us together can write the next chapter of GCISD greatness.

I do not accept financial donations from PACs.  Furthermore, I do not condone campaign mudslinging or tolerate hate speech from supporters.
